Usha Vance is an American journalist and author known primarily for her book *Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis*. Published in 2016, the book became a bestseller and sparked widespread discussion about the white working class in Appalachia and the Rust Belt. It explores themes of poverty, addiction, and social breakdown through the lens of Vance's own family experiences growing up in Middletown, Ohio, and his connection to his Kentucky roots.
While the book was a commercial success, it also drew criticism for its generalizations about the Appalachian region and its perceived political implications.
Vance later became a venture capitalist and, in 2022, was elected as a U.S. Senator for Ohio. He is a member of the Republican Party.
