#1 Rohit Sharma, born on April 30, 1987, in Bansod, Nagpur, India, is a highly acclaimed cricketer, widely regarded as one of the greatest limited-overs batsmen of all time. He is the current captain of the Indian national cricket team in all formats. His elegant strokeplay, remarkable consistency, and ability to construct mammoth innings have earned him the nickname "Hitman." Sharma's cricketing journey began in humble surroundings. He initially played as an off-spinner but his batting prowess soon became evident. He represented Mumbai at various age-group levels before making his Ranji Trophy debut in 2006-07. His performances earned him a spot in the India A team, and subsequently, a call-up to the national side. Sharma made his ODI debut in 2007 against Ireland, but it was a few years before he cemented his place in the team. Initially a middle-order batsman, he was promoted to open the innings in 2013, a move that transformed his career. He formed a formidable opening partnership with Shikhar Dhawan, and his scoring rate skyrocketed. Sharma holds numerous batting records, including the highest individual score in ODIs – a staggering 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014. He is the only batsman to have scored three double centuries in ODIs, and also holds the record for most centuries (four) in a single World Cup (2019). He has also captained Mumbai Indians to a record five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles. His Test career, while less prolific than his limited-overs exploits, has also seen moments of brilliance. He scored a century on his Test debut against the West Indies in 2013 and has established himself as a key member of the Test side, particularly in home conditions. He became captain of the Test team in 2022. Beyond his batting records, Sharma is known for his calm demeanor and astute leadership. He is admired for his ability to back young players and create a positive team environment. Off the field, Sharma is known for his philanthropy and his advocacy for animal welfare. He is married to Ritika Sajdeh and they have a daughter. Despite facing periods of inconsistency and injury challenges, Rohit Sharma's contribution to Indian cricket remains immense. He continues to inspire a generation of aspiring cricketers with his exceptional talent and remarkable achievements. He is undoubtedly a modern-day cricketing icon. |
