English sentences are categorized into three main types based on their structure and the number of clauses they contain:
* **Simple Sentence:** Contains one independent clause (a clause that can stand alone as a complete sentence). It has a subject and a predicate.
* *Example:* The dog barked. (Subject: dog; Predicate: barked)
* *Example:* She is reading a book. (Subject: She; Predicate: is reading a book)
* **Compound Sentence:** Contains two or more independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) or a semicolon (
. Each independent clause could stand alone as a sentence.* *Example:* The dog barked, and the cat hissed.
* *Example:* She is reading a book; he is watching TV.
* **Complex Sentence:** Contains one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses (clauses that cannot stand alone as a complete sentence). A dependent clause relies on the independent clause for its meaning. Dependent clauses are often introduced by subordinating conjunctions (because, although, since, if, when, while, etc.) or relative pronouns (who, whom, whose, which, that).
* *Example:* The dog barked because it was scared. (Independent clause: The dog barked; Dependent clause: because it was scared)
* *Example:* While she was reading, he fell asleep. (Independent clause: he fell asleep; Dependent clause: While she was reading)
It's also possible to have **compound-complex sentences**, which combine elements of compound and complex sentences. These sentences have two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.
* *Example:* Although it was raining, the dog barked, and the cat hissed. (Independent clauses: the dog barked, the cat hissed; Dependent clause: Although it was raining)
